Sanath Wasantha-Visionary Corporate Leaders to Watch 2026

There was a time when businesses were judged almost entirely by what they sold. That equation has quietly changed. Products can now be sourced, replicated and delivered with remarkable efficiency, leaving something far more difficult to compete on: judgement. The ability to understand people before advising them, to create trust before pursuing growth and to build partnerships that outlast transactions has become the new measure of enduring leadership.

Few journeys reflect that evolution more naturally than Sanath Wasantha’s. More than two decades across the Indian Subcontinent and the Maldives have steadily reinforced one conviction: luxury hospitality isn’t elevated by exceptional products alone, but by the relationships, knowledge and stewardship that surround them.

Today, that philosophy is embodied in LIQUID Concept, a premium beverage and hospitality platform he founded to challenge traditional distribution boundaries and create a more connected approach to brands, people, and hospitality. Every decision continues to grow from that belief, shaping a business whose greatest asset isn’t simply the portfolio it represents, but the confidence and trust it has earned.

In this conversation with Portfolio Magazine, Sanath reflects on the experiences, principles and purpose that shaped his leadership, the vision behind LIQUID Concept, and the legacy he hopes to build through trust.

Looking back, what inspired you to establish LIQUID Concept, and what gap did you hope to fill?

Wines and spirits have been a defining pillar of my professional journey. They became my passport to people, cultures and places around the world. Through this industry, I have had the privilege of meeting remarkable people — producers, visionary hoteliers, talented sommeliers and hospitality professionals — who shaped the way I think about business, relationships and leadership. Those experiences taught me something that has stayed with me throughout my career: products may open doors, but trust is what allows you to build relationships that endure.

Over the years, my understanding of the business evolved. Moving premium beverages from one country to another was never going to be enough. I wanted to connect people, honour the heritage behind every brand entrusted to us and help our hospitality partners create experiences guests would remember long after the last glass had been poured. That conviction became the foundation of LIQUID Concept. Distribution is how we deliver value; our purpose is much broader — to engage people, empower businesses and elevate hospitality.

Your leadership philosophy centres on Engage, Empower and Elevate. How has it shaped the culture you've built?

People often see Engage. Empower. Elevate. as three simple words. I see them as the result of years spent learning from different people, cultures and experiences.

Leadership, in my view, has never been about making every decision yourself. It is about creating an environment where good decisions become natural because people understand the purpose behind everything they do.

At LIQUID Concept, every important decision we make is measured against those three principles. We engage by listening before advising. We empower through knowledge, continuous learning and collaboration. We elevate by ensuring every relationship leaves people, businesses and brands stronger than before. They aren’t marketing words. They are principles we rely on every day because I believe leadership achieves its greatest purpose when it creates more leaders rather than more followers.

Luxury hospitality is evolving rapidly. Which changes will define its future, and how are you preparing to make a virtue of this shift?

Consumer expectations have changed remarkably over the past few years, and I believe that is creating one of the most exciting periods our industry has seen. People are increasingly looking beyond prestigious labels. They want authenticity, craftsmanship and the story behind every bottle, making knowledge and education just as valuable as the product itself. Premium non-alcoholic beverages are also opening new possibilities by creating exceptional choices and experiences for every guest.

I also believe the beverage business of today is becoming less about quantity and increasingly about quality — and, ultimately, about the experiences we create. The value of a beverage is no longer defined simply by what is in the bottle, but by the story, knowledge, service and human connection that surround it. Artificial intelligence and technology will undoubtedly help us make better decisions and understand consumer behaviour more deeply. Hospitality, however, will always remain a deeply human business. A thoughtful recommendation, a genuine conversation or a trusted relationship can never be automated.

Technology should strengthen relationships, never replace them. That balance between innovation, human connection and the experiences we create is exactly where I see the future of luxury hospitality.

Expansion is part of your vision, yet you often speak more about purpose than growth. Why has that remained your priority?

Many entrepreneurs naturally measure success by growth. I’ve always believed growth is meaningful only when it strengthens the reason a business exists. Every opportunity we explore has to reinforce our purpose before it expands our footprint. Otherwise, growth becomes an outcome rather than an achievement.

Through LIQUID Concept, we will continue to deepen our presence in luxury hospitality across the Indian Ocean and beyond. My priority is to expand what distribution can mean — moving beyond the supply of products to delivering complete beverage solutions, education, strategic consultancy and experiences that help elevate the broader beverage landscape.

We want to be more than a route to market; we want to be a partner in shaping how beverages are selected, understood, presented and experienced. Every step we take, however, must create meaningful and lasting value for the partners and industries we serve. Building the largest beverage company has never been my ambition. Building LIQUID Concept into one of the most trusted names in our industry. Trust takes years to earn, and every decision either strengthens it or weakens it. That’s why purpose will always guide our direction before growth ever does.

What does leadership mean to you today, and what legacy do you hope to leave behind?

Leadership means something very different to me today than it did when I first started my journey. Early on, success was measured by opportunities and achievements. Today, I see leadership as stewardship — the responsibility to leave every organisation stronger, every partnership deeper and every person more capable than when you first encountered them.

My ambition is for LIQUID Concept to be recognised not simply for the brands we represent, but for the trust we earn, the people we develop, the partnerships we build and the standards we help elevate across the industry. Businesses will always measure performance through numbers, but I believe people remember something very different. They remember how you helped them grow, how you treated them and whether you genuinely created value beyond commercial success.

If LIQUID Concept can leave that kind of impact on the people, brands and hospitality community we serve, I would consider it our greatest achievement.

“Business exists to create value for people before it creates value for itself.”
