Sona Comstar’s Board Appoints Priya Sachdev Amid Tensions

Sona Comstar Appoints Priya Sachdev as Non-Executive Director

Shareholders of the auto components manufacturing firm, Sona Comstar, have appointed Priya Sachdev Kapur as a non-executive director, following the death of the chairman of the company, Sanjay Kaopur.

Sanjay Kapur, who had long been the chairman of the company, died suddenly on June 12, 2025, while playing Polo in London. After his death, turmoil struck, and Sona Comstar appointed Jeffrey Mark Overly as Chairman on June 23. At the company’s annual general meeting held on July 25, shareholders passed a resolution to appoint Priya Sachdev, wife of the late Sanjay Kapur, as the non-executive chairman of the company, with 99.44% of the votes in her favour.

However, the former chairperson of the company and Sanjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, in a letter to the board on July 24, alleged that some people had used the family’s mourning period as an opportunity to seize control of the company and usurp the family’s legacy.

She also raised questions over the circumstances of her son’s death. Mrs Kapur thinks that this is not merely an accident and there is more to it than meets the eye. In a statement issued through her legal counsel, Vaibhav Gaggar, she contested the official version of the events.

Gaggar said, “For my client, as a mother, it’s deeply painful to watch this being dismissed as a mere freak accident and cardiac arrest. She would not stay silent until that truth is acknowledged.”

Rani Kapur also alleged that she was pressured into signing some documents following the death of her son. She has urged the board to cancel the AGM and warned against the appointment of any new directors.
