India allocated $680 million to Mauritius for initiatives in healthcare, infrastructure, and maritime security, including protecting the Chagos marine reserve. This move aims to enhance its regional influence amidst competition with China.
During Prime Minister Ramgoolam’s visit, India pledged $680 million in aid to Mauritius, including support for the Chagos marine reserve.
Britain transferred Chagos island sovereignty to Mauritius but retained control of a military base under lease, reflecting shifting regional dynamics. This aid will help them maintain the archipelago.

The assistance also funds a new hospital, port redevelopment, helicopter supply, and provides $25 million in budget support for Mauritius this year.
