California-based company Stripe reportedly has finalised a deal to acquire OpenRouter Inc., which helps companies switch to artificial intelligence models. According to a Bloomberg report, the deal is worth over $7 billion. The price mentioned could change accordingly, as the news isn’t public yet and was reported under anonymous conditions.
The offer was speculated about just a month after OpenRouter raised $113 million at a valuation of around $1.3 billion, aiming to find the most cost-effective AI solutions. This could be a step up for Stripe to enter the world of the fast-growing artificial intelligence sector. OpenRouter, a New York-based AI model marketplace, was founded in 2023, and its main aim was to provide access to hundreds of AI models, matching developers with the most effective and affordable model for the job. Earlier, the company had attracted some of the biggest investors in Silicon Valley, like CapitalG, one of Alphabet Inc.’s venture arms, as well as Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures.

In May 2026, OpenRouter said that it served 8 million developers who relied on it to access more than 400 different AI models. Its main growth is coming from the developers who experiment with different models, a process that requires a mix of infrastructure that can work across different providers and data resources.
Stripe’s spokesperson commented that they do not comment on rumours or speculations, whereas OpenRouter declined to comment on this topic.
