Corgi is a technology startup that offers artificial intelligence-powered insurance to other startup companies. The company uses AI to provide fast insurance quotes and speed up claims processing and payments. It sells many types of coverage, including general liability, tech accident protection, employee liability, office renters’ insurance, and commercial auto insurance.
However, insurance requires a lot of cash. Corgi uses a unique setup called a Risk Retention Group (RRG). In an RRG, businesses in the same industry pool their money to insure one another. The big risk is that claims are paid directly out of this shared money pool. A large claim can significantly reduce the shared pool, leaving less money available for future claims. Even worse, these groups are not protected by state emergency funds. If the money runs out, the member companies must pay for the losses themselves, and huge claims can bankrupt the whole system.
Because Corgi needs to build up its money reserves, the company is branching out into completely different industries. It now sells data room software, despite recently facing public criticism over how the software was coded. When Corgi announced its Series A seven months ago, the founders said their company had already hit $40 million in annualised revenue run rate. Sources told Forbes it’s now on track to increase run rate to $450 million by the end of the year.
Additionally, the startup runs two 24-hour coffee shops in San Francisco and Atlanta named Corgi Cafe. These cafes sell drinks with playful, ad-sponsored names like “Brexspresso.” Corgi plans to open five more cafes soon, targeting New York and London. Opening additional physical café locations will require significant investment.

At the same time, Corgi has developed a reputation in Silicon Valley for having an incredibly intense work culture. This notoriety grew after the founder and CEO, Nico Laqua, publicly stated that he expects his employees to work seven days a week.
