KKR Acquires Medicover India in Historic $1.4B Deal

KKRs $14B Investment to Buy Medicover Hospitals India

US investment firm KKR has officially agreed to buy 100% of Medicover Hospitals India in a massive deal valued at €1.2 billion, which is around $1.4 billion. This marks the largest healthcare acquisition that KKR has ever made in the Indian market. To make this happen, KKR funds will buy the entire business, taking a 66.1% share from the Swedish parent company, Medicover, and the remaining 33.9% from minority partners.

This major sale will bring in €740 million (₹70,50,58,31,000) in cash for the parent company, allowing it to shift its main focus, money, and management energy toward growing its healthcare systems in European countries like Poland, Germany, and Romania. The entire transaction is expected to officially close in the fourth quarter of 2026 after getting the necessary approvals from regulators.

Currently, Medicover India is a large network that operates 24 hospitals and manages about 4,800 beds across Southern and Western India. They have a strong team of over 1,900 doctors who offer medical care across more than 80 different health specialities, helping millions of patients every year.

KKR plans to eventually merge Medicover India with Baby Memorial Hospital, another healthcare chain they bought in 2024. Joining these two businesses together will create a massive network of hospitals spanning across multiple states, including Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

This expansion would enable KKR to effectively compete with India’s leading hospital groups such as Apollo Hospitals, Manipal Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare and Max Healthcare. Akshay Tanna, the head of KKR in India, affirmed that his company will completely back up Medicover India by investing in talent, technology, and hospital infrastructure, and retaining the highest quality of medicine and operations.
