A Group of Advocates Sues Trump Over Trade Tariffs

Trump Administration Sued! Is Donald Trump in Trouble?

On Monday, a legal advocacy organization petitioned the US Court of International Trade to prevent President Trump from implementing extensive tariffs on several foreign trade partners of the United States, claiming that the president has exceeded his powers.

The non-partisan Liberty Justice Center has initiated legal action to assist approximately five American companies that import products from nations subject to tariffs. Among these companies are a delightful spirit and wine importer located in New York and an innovative manufacturer of educational and musical instruments based in Virginia. Their legal challenge seeks to contest President Trump’s tariffs imposed on April 2, often referred to as “Liberation Day,” which affect all trading partners, in addition to the supplemental duties and taxes applied to imports from China.

In a statement on the matter, a senior counsel of the Liberty Justice Center, Jeffrey Schwab, said, “No one person should have the power to impose taxes that have such vast global economic consequences. The Constitution gives the power to set tax rates — including tariffs — to Congress, not the President.”

The lawsuit asked the court to block the trade tariffs on every trade partner, including China, and announce that Trump lacked the authority to impose them. The New York-based Court of International Trade is a federal bank of the United States of America with jurisdiction over most trade-related matters.
