Deep in central India, where the forests are green and the land is full of natural treasures, something big has been happening. The man behind it all? Bhupesh Baghel.
Most of us call him “Kaka”. He didn’t start off in a fancy office; he grew up in a simple farming family. Because he knows what it’s like to work for the land, his journey to becoming the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh is really a story about staying true to your roots.
This blog is not just a blog; it’s an inspiring success story of Bhupesh Baghel that shows how focusing on local culture and helping everyday people can truly transform a state.
How a Village Farmer Became Chief Minister?
Bhupesh Baghel was born on the 23rd day of August 1961 in the Durg district. He comes from a lineage of agriculturists, having a fair idea of what being an agriculturist means, and hence, it moulded his ideology.
Starting out politically with the youth wing of Congress in the 80s, Bhupesh got into politics under the tutelage of Chandulal Chandrakar. His success did not happen by luck, but through hard work, which led him there step by step.
His first win as a Member of Parliament came at the time of the elections of 1993 in the constituency of Patan. The constituency of Patan is one that has elected Bhupesh 5 different times now. Before even the formation of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh had already established himself as a Minister. However, it all started after the year 2000.
Bringing the Congress Back to Life
All great leaders have that one defining moment when they realise themselves. For Bhupesh Baghel, that moment came during his darkest hour, which fell in 2013. An unprecedented assault occurred at Jhiram Ghati, where almost all the prominent leaders of Congress were wiped out.
Stepping in as the new President of the party right after that was a huge challenge. But it was not just about sustaining the party’s efforts; it was about revitalising the party itself. He managed to put an end to the party’s internal fighting, making it work as one, which proved successful. In 2018, under his leadership, the party won big, winning 68 seats out of 90 and bringing to an end the 15-year reign of the BJP.
Governance with a “Desi” Touch: Key Initiatives
With the election of Bhupesh Baghel as the Chief Minister towards the end of 2018 came his basic pledge to create a “new Chhattisgarh” that was summed up in the phrase “Gadhbo Nava Chhattisgarh.” His efforts were aimed at rural Chhattisgarh and its farmers.
Here are a few ways that show how he actually made that happen:
The NGGB Model (Narva, Garva, Ghurva, Bari)
Perhaps his most famous initiative, this scheme focused on the four pillars of rural life: Rivers (Narva), Livestock (Garva), Composting (Ghurva), and Kitchen Gardens (Bari). It aimed to revive the rural economy by promoting water conservation and organic farming.
Godhan Nyay Yojana
In a move that surprised everyone, the government started buying cow dung from farmers for ₹2 a kilo! They turned it into organic fertiliser. This was such a clever way to put extra money in farmers’ pockets that even the prime minister praised it.
Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana
Through the Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana, he made sure farmers received cash help directly in their bank accounts. This turned Chhattisgarh into one of the best places in India to be a farmer.
Education and Health for All
- English Schools: He started the Swami Atmanand schools, which give kids from poor families a high-quality English education for free, just like expensive private schools.
- Mobile Doctors: Since many people live in deep forests, he started Haat-Bazar Clinics. Basically, doctors in vans visit local village markets so that even the most remote families can easily get medical help.

Bhupesh Bhagel: The Kaka We All Know
Despite the fact that there was a shift in the governance following the 2023 election, the contributions of Bhupesh Baghel are highly significant in relation to Chhattisgarh. It is by 2025 that Baghel becomes a prominent figure at the national level, taking the position as the leader of the Congress Party in Punjab.
His journey is pretty incredible. He went from being a farmer’s son to a chief minister whose “Chhattisgarh Model” was talked about all over India. It just goes to show how much you can achieve when you stay true to your roots. As “Kaka” starts this next chapter of his career, he is still known most for his focus on “Nyay” (Justice) and making sure the people who are often forgotten finally have a voice.
