Instagram Introduces New Features Like Map, Reposts, and a Friends Reels tab

Instagram Rolls Out Map, Reposts & Friends Reels Tab

Instagram has introduced new features aimed at enhancing user connection with friends, including reposts, location sharing, a new ‘Friends’ tab in Reels, and more.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, announced several updates. Users can now repost Reels and in-feed posts from public profiles, which are credited to the original poster. Reposted content appears in followers’ feeds and on a separate profile tab for easy access.

A key new feature is the Instagram map for location sharing. Users can responsibly share their location with chosen friends. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, highlighted that sharing is completely voluntary and user-controlled. Options include custom lists, Close Friends, or followers you follow back. Location tags in stories appear on the map for 24 hours but do not show real-time or live locations. Parents using teen supervision features can monitor and manage their child’s location sharing and receive notifications about their activity.

Another feature is the ‘Friends’ tab in Reels, allowing users to view public content their friends have interacted with and receive recommendations from their activities. This tab, rolled out earlier this year before going global, is accessible at the top of the Reels section. Users can control what appears here, including hiding their likes and comments or muting activity from specific people.

To customise this feature, users can go to Settings > Activity and choose who can see their Reels interactions, with options to restrict sharing altogether.

These updates aim to foster better social connectivity while emphasizing user control and privacy. Instagram continues to add features that balance engagement with privacy considerations, giving users more ways to connect with friends securely.

In summary, Instagram’s latest features include reposting Reels and posts, a new location sharing map with privacy controls, and an enhanced ‘Friends’ tab in Reels, offering richer engagement options while respecting user privacy.
