Razorpay & NPCI Test AI UPI Payments on ChatGPT

Razorpay and NPCI Introduced AI-Powered UPI Payments on ChatGPT

On October 10, Razorpay, in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), initiated a pilot program for autonomous UPI transactions within ChatGPT. This collaboration with OpenAI marks a major step toward effortless, AI-powered commerce, enabling users to make payments smoothly via chat AI.

Announced on October 10, 2025, the initiative promises to handle UPI transactions autonomously on behalf of users, all while prioritising safety, security, and user control.

“We are excited to work with NPCI and explore how we can combine AI with UPI to unlock a new era of effortless and secure commerce,” said Oliver Jay, Managing Director of International Strategy at OpenAI, in a joint statement.

Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank serve as the banking anchors for this pilot, ensuring robust infrastructure and support. E-commerce giant Bigbasket leads the charge as one of the first platforms to enable shopping via ChatGPT, allowing customers to browse, select, and pay all within a single chat window.

UPI, India’s leading payments network, handles over 20 billion transactions per month, supporting a diverse range of users, from street vendors to online giants. Integrating AI in this pilot aims to reduce transaction friction and improve accessibility, potentially increasing inclusion for less tech-savvy users. Experts see this as an innovative step toward “conversational commerce,” where AI predicts needs and completes transactions securely.

As the pilot rolls out, questions linger on scalability and privacy safeguards. If successful, it could inspire global adaptations, transforming chats into economic engines. With India’s digital economy booming, this venture offers a glimpse of a frictionless future where payments are as intuitive as conversation.
