Google Hires Windsurf’s Team to Elevate AI Coding Game

Google Wins Key AI Talent from Windsurf After OpenAI Fails to Acquire

Google’s recruitment of Windsurf employees accelerated Google’s actions to scale the AI building capabilities. Google hired Windsurf’s employees after hiring Windsurf Co-Founder Douglas Chen and CEO Varun Mohan, both of whom joined the company almost immediately after OpenAI expressed interest in hiring Windsurf employees.

The leadership team will be joining Google DeepMind to work on the Gemini project, focusing on agentic coding, an area of artificial intelligence that is rapidly developing, in which software agents autonomously write and improve software code.

Jeff Wang, the former head of business at Windsurf, will serve as interim CEO, and Graham Moreno, the vice president of global sales, will assume the role of president. Google confirmed the hiring via a statement on Friday; it also reiterated that it is building AI talent across all levels of the organisation.

This represents a significant reconfiguration of the competitive landscape for AI software development tools, as OpenAI was negotiating to acquire Windsurf as recently as June.

While OpenAI declined to comment, industry experts view Google’s acquisition of this specialised talent as a notable advance in the race for next-generation AI coding systems.
