Several companies are laying off their employees. Google might once again join the list, as the tech giant has announced a voluntary exit program (VEP) for its employees in the United States of America. This has raised many concerns regarding future layoffs as part of a cost-cutting measure.
The “Voluntary Exit Program” was offered to employees in several key areas, such as research, marketing, central engineering, communications, and knowledge and information. This comes after the knowledge and information team underwent a major reorganisation in October last year, after which the head of the knowledge and information team was appointed Google Executive Nick Fox.
To inform about this development, Nick sent out a memo to his staff stating, “I want to be very clear: If you’re excited about your work, energised by the opportunity ahead, and performing well, I really (really!) hope you don’t take this! We have ambitious plans and tons to get done.” He further added, “On the other hand, this VEP offers a supportive exit path for those of you who don’t feel aligned with our strategy, don’t feel energised by your work, or are having difficulty meeting the expectations of your role.”
Uncertainty about layoffs exists for good reasons. Companies around the world are cutting their workforce significantly to ensure better financials. Recently, Disney also laid off several employees from its film division, to name a few. Moreover, Google itself is no stranger to layoffs. In 2023, the tech giant laid off more than 12,000 employees. Ever since then, Google has been restructuring the organisation to make it leaner. This VEP comes in the wake of that.
